HABITAT RESTORATION AND CREATION

This specialised subject is a new discipline and often necessitates research and experiment prior to ground implementation. Our research studies in this field are included in the Research topic page. On-the-ground projects cover three areas:

Habitat reinstatement and restoration
Reinstatement involves the short-term, temporary storage and replacement of the original vegetation, while restoration is undertaken where there is no surviving vegetation. Method Statements have been written for:

protection of bog habitat during pipeline laying near Falkirk
heathland reinstatement following drilling on the Cumbrian coast
reinstatement of salt-marsh after board walk construction at Arrochar
woodland restoration and burn diversion on the A96 Blackburn to Kintore Bypass

young heather plants

meadow
Habitat creation
Creation of new habitat is increasingly undertaken for compensation or enhancement. Projects include:
concept design for a community woodland on a proposed landfill site, Stirlingshire
wildflower grassland creation on an old layby, Fife
provision of bat bricks in new structures to replace habitat lost to bridge demolition on the A92 Dundee to Arbroath upgrade

Habitat and species translocation
Loss of ecologically important habitat should be avoided whenever possible, but translocation of vegetation or fauna may sometimes be necessary. Projects include:
transplantation of Horned Pondweed at an Ayrshire quarry
translocation of aquatic vegetation during burn diversions
transplantation of woodland topsoil, turf and trees on the A96 upgrade
