Client: Balfour Beatty
Since 2015, we have been providing Environmental Clerk of Works (EnvCoW) cover to the ‘Caithness Cluster’, comprising the Thurso South, Mybster, Spittal and Dounreay substation construction projects, plus the overhead powerline upgrade from Dounreay to Mybster.
As well as protected species checks and bird deterrence, the key issue at the substations has been site drainage because of the wet, peaty soils found at the sites, particularly at Thurso South, which is close to the River Thurso SAC. To this end, extra attention has been paid to the temporary drainage design, with care taken to ensure that the temporary SuDS pond system is well maintained and with over-pumping and back pumping implemented in response to heavy rain events.
Other issues covered by the EnvCoW include checking COSSH stores, waste streaming, use of plant nappies and site house-keeping.
